Hamtun Boat race 2019
On a lovely late summer afternoon on Saturday 7th September, the annual Hamtun rowing race took place - this year including a SSA crew!
Three boats entered, one from ABP and the third from the MAIB.
Former harbourmaster Martin Phipps once again organized the event on behalf of Southampton Sea cadets and rowed in the ABP boat.
Williams Shipping staff manned a launch to tow the boats to the start and act as a safety boat during the race.
Given that our crew was assembled about 30 minutes hefore the race, they put in a very good effort, covering the course from SCT 3 to the Empress in a respectable time.
Waiting for the crews when they returned were friends and family, a hog roast, and, most importantly, a couple of beers with which to celebrate, care of Southampton Shipowners’ and set up in Whitaker's carpark by Ash and Nick, plus their better halves, Gill Phipps and Lisa Vail from Solent Towage. Gill Phipps had also made a selection of lovely cakes!
The entry fee and sponsorship went to the cadets.
Congratulations to all who took part and supported.
Photos include Martin presenting the winner’s trophy to Emma Tiller of the MAIB crew. Also the valiant SSA and ABP crews!
The Shipowners’ will be ready and hopefully a little more prepared for next year's race!
